iOS

iOS is the operating system developed by Apple for various devices, such as the iPhone, iPod, and iPad. Since 2019, the iPad has had its own operating system, iPadOS. Every iPhone runs on iOS, which is a closed-source operating system, meaning that only Apple may use and modify it.

Despite not being the most widely used operating system, iOS generated the most revenue in 2021 through the App Store. The App Store had a revenue of over 85 billion, while its competitor, Google Play, had only 47 billion.

What does iOS mean?

The term iOS can be divided into “i” and “OS”. Upon its initial release in 2007, alongside the first iPhone, it was known as iPhone OS. In 2010, it was rebranded as iOS. The “i” represents iPhone, while the "OS" represents Operating System.

What iOS does

iOS allows users to install apps, type and swipe on the screen, and use Face ID and Touch ID. Without iOS, an iPhone or any other iOS device would essentially be useless, as it manages everything within the device.

The operating system always comes with more than 30 standard applications, such as:

The advantages of iOS

As previously mentioned, iOS is a closed operating system that can only be used on Apple devices. Since they have complete control over the hardware (iPhone) and the software (iOS), they can perfectly tailor them to each other, resulting in seamless collaboration between all products and optimal, smooth, and fast operation.

Here are the two main advantages:

Ease of use

The design is so simple that it is very easy to use. Users who go from an old iOS version to the latest version can do so effortlessly.

Security

Apple phones and other devices can be used without any problems thanks to the strict security processes offered by the platform. Devices running on this system have no chance of viruses or other malicious code because apps and features are tested for the specific platform before they are loaded for use. The system supports both fingerprint and facial recognition sensors, ensuring double security checks.

The disadvantages

For many people, the iPhone is the product, but here are the two biggest drawbacks:

Storage

Unlike most Android devices, you cannot expand the storage capacity of Apple devices. So, if you need more storage, you need to buy a new device or clean up your current one if possible.

Not open source

It is important to note that iOS is not open source, which restricts the ability to customise it on non-Apple devices.
